As the Engineering and Computing sector continues to grow globally, with technical skills becoming invaluable in a world ruled by computer systems, the demand for competent engineering and computing graduates has never been greater. Our Engineering Foundation Course combines elements of Engineering and Computing and provides our students with a strong grounding in relevant scientific subjects, including Physics and Chemistry, and core technical subjects such as Computing and Mathematics. This combination of classes hones student’s technical skills and encourages an analytical approach to problem solving which will be invaluable during their first year of university.

Engineering has long been a male-dominated industry, but changing attitudes are now narrowing the gender gap. More and more female students are opting to study Engineering due to fantastic career prospects, job satisfaction and rewarding salaries available to graduates. Samira studied on our Engineering pathway and has since gone on to obtain a degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Manchester. She now works for Rolls Royce as an engineer. Here is what she had to say about her time on the UFP.

‘I appreciated the UFP engineering programme structure as it focused not only on my targeted subjects but it also introduced me to soft skills such as IT and programming languages, which no doubt put me ahead of my colleagues during my Aerospace Engineering degree. When I first joined the UFP, what really comforted me was how the teachers and staff were eager to help me adjust to studying in a foreign country. It is hard to live without family and cope in a new environment, so it was a relief to see teachers become my life time mentors, guiding me through my studies, personal issues and university application very step of the way.’

Our successful Engineering students go on to study a range of Engineering undergraduate courses at high-ranking British universities.

Here’s what some of our past students had to say about their time on our Engineering Foundation Course.

Have you received your WAEC result yet? We’d love to hear from all you students in The Gambia, Ghana and Nigeria thinking about what to do next with your grades.

Here at UFP, we can help. Take a new step and come to London to study because it’s officially the world’s best student city, according to the prestigious QS Best Student City Rankings 2022.

Why pick UFP?

We specialise in preparing international students for university entry to world-class destinations. Our foundation programme has more than 30 student nationalities. So you can feel right at home here in our cosmopolitan city, among a multi-cultural, inclusive college community.

Students can do a one-year course with UFP and be ready for university entry in September 2022.

Our foundation pathways suit most undergraduate degrees. They are accepted by most British universities, with many of our students progressing to Russell Group destinations.

Since UFP started in 1989, we have never failed to place a student at a top university upon successful completion of our foundation programme. So you can be confident you’re in safe hands!

Find out more about our courses or you can apply for our January 2022 intake online.

In light of recent developments with the Coronavirus pandemic in the UK, the Directors of the UFP Department of David Game College London have made the executive decision to move ALL classes online from 4th to 29th January 2021. Please note that this is NOT a requirement of the UK government, but a precaution we have decided to take as a department, in light of numerous factors, as best serving the overall health, safety and well-being of our students. Factors which have contributed to our decision include the increasing global infection rate, concerns about new strains of the virus emerging internationally, changing travel restrictions, and varying quarantine periods for students arriving in the UK from overseas.

It is our intention, unless we are instructed otherwise by the UK government, for ALL classes to revert to in-person only from Monday 1st February 2021. We hope that students will use the 4 weeks of online classes as an opportunity to make their travel arrangements (if they are overseas), quarantine in the UK (if this is required based on their country of departure) and prepare for the new term without the pressure of physical attendance in the College.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS ANNOUNCEMENT DOES NOT APPLY TO A-LEVEL OR GCSE STUDENTS OF THE DAVID GAME COLLEGE LONDON, OR UFP ART & DESIGN STUDENTS. (As Art & Design cannot be taught online, students for this pathway are being asked to still attend the College in person. However, the risks to them will be reduced as there will be no other students in the UFP department, and they will have sole-access to the entire 5th floor of the College with all recommended safety measures in place.)

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the College:

Telephone: 0044 207 727 7774

While A Levels are seen as the traditional route to university for British students, this is not the only option. A foundation year can open the door to higher education for British students who may not possess the strong academic background required to succeed at A Level, or for those who have taken a short break from education for personal reasons.

Why should you choose a foundation year over A Level?

A foundation programme such as the UFP provides a supportive environment and acts as a stepping stone that bridges the gap between your GCSEs and university. While it is recognised as an A Level equivalent, a foundation year is a faster alternative route to university, that eases you back into an academic environment while providing access to a wide range of degree courses at over 90 universities.

Instead of committing to 2 years of study, a foundation programme is a one-year course. This is ideal for British students who may be disappointed with their A/AS Level results but are reluctant to repeat another 2 years studying.

What can you study?
On a foundation programme, you can choose to study a particular pathway that relates directly to your area of interest and desired degree subject. The pathway you will study will equip you with the fundamental knowledge required for your first year at university by providing a thorough introduction to each subject and allowing you to gain essential skills.

For example, if you’re a budding entrepreneur hoping to study an undergraduate degree in Business Management, you would embark on the Business and Finance pathway. If your goal is to become a pharmacist in the future, you would opt for the Science and Pharmacy pathway. Each pathway is clearly linked to university degree courses, so you can be reassured that you are studying relevant topics that will fully prepare you for your first year. See our full list of pathways here.

What qualifications do you need to join a foundation programme?
To join the UFP, you will need to have completed 5 GCSEs and achieved A-C in each. See the list of entry requirements here.

UFP Students enjoyed a fantastic tour of the BBC’s iconic Broadcasting House here in London.

Students were able to learn about the BBC’s different activities through TV, Online and Radio broadcasting. They were even given the opportunity to try their hand in front of the camera reading the news, presenting the weather and also starring in a radio play!

Read more from our students about this amazing experience!

Parmida (Iran):

‘The BBC tour was the most interesting tour I have ever had!

The tour guides were very friendly and explained everything in detail for us. The newsroom amazed me because of how big it was and the technology was very updated. We were able to do a news broadcast as a practice and also a short radio play for fun as well. I participated in both and thought they were extremely interesting. I am more interested in camera work and TV broadcasting so I think that I will focus on it in my time at university as well. I wish that we could see other studios as well but of course it is a working place and there are security reasons as well. Overall, I really enjoyed this tour and it was very fun!’

Akshay (Tanzania)

‘The BBC Trip was a great experience. I felt it helped me by providing me knowledge of how broadcasting works. I have become more open minded and more creative from learning how they do what they do. I learnt that they have lots of technology, facilities and equipment that help to gather information instead of having to look around for it. The staff is divided into groups and they have a special team to research each different show that the BBC has. This makes it more organised and quicker for their news and shows to be produced.

They have capacity for up to 4500 staff members: 5 floors of studios, with a different studio for Domestic and International News programmes and another for weather forecasts. Most things are not the same in real life as they look in the studio. It looks very different when you compared to it on TV. Overall I enjoyed the trip and learnt a lot! I also had a great time bonding with my classmates and teacher’.

Fiammetta (Italy)

‘The tour was very engaging: it not only illustrated the functions of each department, explaining how news and information come and pass through different broadcasts (TV, Online-website and Radio), but they also involved visitors with anecdotes and curiosities upon the BBC’s history.

“Inform, educate and entertain”, were the BBC’s three main objectives established by the first general director, John Reith. The guides introduced us into this media giant and moreover, they allowed us to experience working in the studios, such as presenting the news and weather on a green background, or storytelling on the radio.

It was surprising to find out how people and environments transform reality to the screen. Witnessing the actual course of this transformation, I questioned to what extent representations of reality can be perfected, and even distorted, through the media’s tools. The BBC indeed plays a significant role in the process of the faithful representation of world events. As it is available via a licence fee, the UK Corporation is historically acknowledged for objectivity and providing non-bias information.

My favourite part of the tour was definitely the radio studio. The guides showed us pictures of popular artists’ concerts, including Bon Jovi, Elton John, and Michael Buble, which took place there. And they surprisingly confessed that the BBC had paid those singers no more than £66 as the event offered them consistent promotional support. Furthermore, what most impressed me in relation to the history of the BBC, which was initially created as Radio Broadcasting, was an incredible episode occurred during the second bombing attack on the building. The guides let us listen an audio recorded on the day of the attack: the radio host was presenting news when the bomb was dropped on highest floors, not provoking evident effects on the presenter who impassively continued his program. That was astonishing!’

Media students at UFP London welcomed journalist Hasham Cheema to their class last week. Hasham has worked with Al Jazeera and ITV, and he was able to share not only his knowledge of investigative journalism but also his personal experiences as an International Student in the UK.

Born in Pakistan, Hasham wanted to pursue his studies in the UK and decided to join the University of Arts of London. He would soon realise being a speaker of Urdu could be extremely valuable in the media industry in the UK.

“Moving to England to study journalism was a good idea because I got to understand journalism not only from an academic perspective but I also got a good view of the inner workings of the industry”

During the class he presented his work as an undercover reporter and our students found this very inspiring and motivating.

“Last Thursday we had a special guest called Hasham Cheema. Before he visited the UFP, we did not have a lot of opportunities to listen to real experiences in the media industry. Hasham told many stories about what he has done in the past and what kind of method he used for his documentaries. He also reminded me of the importance of planning. He is a foreigner in the UK like us, therefore, a bond of sympathy developed between him and us” (San, South Korea).

“The special guest Hasham was very friendly and natural. It seemed like he knew us. I learned many things related to documentaries, but also, more personal ones that I enjoyed very much. It was also easy to understand his experiences” (Bia, Angola)

“I enjoyed listening to Hasham. It was interesting to know how he got into the industry and hear the practical side of making documentaries, like equipment and filming difficulties, legal issues, such as what you can and cannot show on TV” (Mariia, Ukraine)

“I found the session extremely helpful and interesting, especially since I want to create documentaries in the future. Mr Hasham seemed very interested in his work and was able to explain it in detail to us. He was excited to hear about us and answer any questions about his work. Personally, I believe he was very brave for what he did in his documentary and it deserves a lot more attention. I would love to see more documentaries of this type and to hear more about him and his work. I’m really looking forward to our other special guest speakers” (Parmida, Iran)

“Hasham managed to immerse us in the topic of undercover journalism and how it manages to challenge ideologies that people have. He was very interactive with the class by speaking to us about important factors he faced doing his job. The highlight of the class was when he shared his knowledge and experience on how to deal with difficulties in our future media careers, based on each other’s countries. He was friendly and answered all our questions personally which made us interested in his film”. (Alia, Egypt).

“Mr Hasham, an undercover reporter visited us as a special guest and gave us a workshop on his job. He talked about his job and what he does. I learned that it is a very exciting job with a lot of risks. To receive permission to film someone without them knowing, we need strong evidence about them. Don’t expect it to be quick and easy, it takes a lot of time and it is very hard to get a lot of information, as we cannot ask directly but we have to direct them to say things. You, as an undercover reporter, have to be prepared with equipment, questions and situations. It was a great experience”. (Akshay, Tanzania).
